This is the story that Wynton Marsalis began to tell in partnering with another frequent JIM visitor, Richard Galliano.vThe union was a tribute to two emblematic figures: Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf. Two extraordinary women, born in the same year (1915), in the same misery, both with grand and tragic fates, and most especially, with two ways of singing this blue soul that African Americans call the blues. -

The 9-song album, recorded in the summer of 2008 when Wynton Marsalis and his quintet teamed-up with French accordionist Richard Galliano at the annual Jazz in Marciac festival in Southern France to pay tribute to the late legends Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf, is available in two formats, a deluxe CD/DVD edition and a standard audio CD.

Richard Galliano, a renowned French-born accordionist who has collaborated with musicians including Chet Baker, Ron Carter and Charlie Haden. Hailed as an extremely versatile musician who is able to masterfully navigate many musical contexts and genres, Galliano is the recipient of the prestigious Academie du Jazz Django Reinhardt Prize awarded annually to the best French musician. -

Marciac 2008: First rehearsal day with the Quintet
Today, Wynton and his Quintet (Walter Blanding, Dan Nimmer, Carlos Henriquez, Ali Jackson) rehearsed together for the upcoming concert with Richard Galliano. Wynton wrote some nice arrangements (just wrote…) and tomorrow Mr. Galliano will come with his accordion to rehearse with the Quintet. The song they played today are: Them There Eyes, Comes Love, A Sailboat in the Moonlight, Miss Brown to You, What a Little Moonlight Can Do, Strange Fruit, La Foule, La Vie en Rose, Billie.
