Big Band Holidays II

Here are eight of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s holiday arrangements, in a complete six chart set at over 10% off of the retail prices.
These charts come from their two Big Band Holidays I and II records, and with one piece each by Wynton Marsalis, Chris Crenshaw, Ted Nash, Carlos Henriquez, Victor Goines, Vincent Gardner, and two from Sherman Irby, this set gives a wide and deep look at the varying styles and abilities of some of the musicians who make up one of the world’s best jazz ensembles. With various styles and difficulty levels, vocals and instrumental, this is a diverse and vibrant set of holiday music.

A jovial jaunt on television personality Steve Allen’s tribute to the holiday season courtesy of Sherman Irby, “Cool Yule” will be a delight for both your band to play and your audience to listen to. Originally written to feature vocalist Catherine Russell, your singer’s performance should seek to match the light playfulness of hers. The ensemble sections bear more than a passing resemblance to the classic style of the Count Basie orchestra, and should be played in a similar manner. There is an open solo section in addition to a specific solo section for tenor saxophone.

Beginning with an extended rubato call-and-response between the trombones and saxes, this Ted Nash take on the traditional holiday hymn eventually finds its groove as a quasi-Latin feel. There is a sizable amount of counterpoint and cross-ensemble writing throughout that will require some attention in order for this chart to work to its best. Even during its softer parts, your performance should maintain a sense of probing urgency to it at all times. The extended solo section in the middle features trumpet.

Orignally made famous by singer Andy Williams, this holiday favorite was arranged by Wynton Marsalis for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Big Band Holidays II album. Full of lush harmonies, inventive rhythmic figures, and that unmistakable blues tinge that Wynton is famous for, this chart has solo space for trumpet, clarinet, piano, and flute. Note that all woodwinds have doubles (see the contents tab). This would be a show-stopper for your holiday concert!

Arranged by Sherman Irby.
Originally a hit for the Claude Thornhill Orchestra, Sherman Irby’s interpretation of “Snowfall” follows the structure of the original fairly closely while adding in some Ellington-style inflections along the way. The arrangement largely features trumpet soloist, first weaving in and around the ensemble before eventually getting some space to themselves. Short, but sweet, this arrangement will serve as a delightful change of pace in your group’s holiday concert!

The uniqueness of this Carlos Henriquez treatment of a holiday classic comes from how it cleverly weaves together the vocals of Denzal Sinclaire with delightfully complex ensemble passages. Taking its harmonic cues from Coltrane-influenced modality, the ensemble sections will provide your musicians with a captivating challenge. In addition to several brief solo moments split across the ensemble, there are open extended solo sections for piano and baritone sax.
