Wynton and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar talk and play basketball

I stepped away from the composition I’m working on to spend some time with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on Wednesday. He interviewed me for his upcoming documentary, “On the Shoulders of Giants”, which will be out in November.
After the interview, Kareem and I shot around. The skyhook was still there, and I showcased my jumpshot. Kareem said my form looked good.
What more could a kid from Kenner, LA ask for…

  2. Wynton,
What Kareem is to basketball you are to jazz. You are both giants in your respective field of expertise. I was hoping to meet you at the Monterey Jass Festival. My grandparents, the Soniats, lived next door to your grandfather on Shewsbury Road in New Orleans. My uncle Marvin went to school with your father in Snowhill Alabama. My band instructor in high school was Ernest Chachere and I was in the saxophone section with Earl Turbinton. I feel that we are somewhat conected. Your performance at the 2009 Monterey Jazz Festival was tremendous. Keep on allowing the band to play the hard bop compositions from the 50’s and 60’s.
I pray that you are able to keep on doing what you are doing for the ‘music’.

  5. Wynton, Peace and Progress! Obviously, sounding like a love-struck schoolgirl, I smiled when I saw pics of two talented brothers engaging in a meeting place that involved intellect, movement, and laughs. Thanks!

  6. I glad and proud to see the Captain still holding things up with grace and passion. Janice Brown was my first girlfriend and I was born 4=21=47, and I’ve been a basketball coach for 42 years. Keep up the good work Cap. Your brother Michael.
