Two ‘big bands’ come together in the one concert hall when the SSO meets Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis!
For Wynton Marsalis it’s true: ‘It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing.’ It doesn’t matter where you are in the history of jazz, he says, the spirit of swing is always present. It’s perpetually new, it revives itself, it’s timeless. A swing rhythm doesn’t age. And it’s all about the spirit of collaboration, finding equilibrium with other people. Which is exactly what happens in his Swing Symphony, when the big band meets the symphony orchestra. In just under an hour, Marsalis makes a musical journey: jump-cutting between ragtime, Charleston, big band, bebop and beyond. It’s the perfect fusion of the rhythms and riffs of jazz with the richness of the classical sound.
