Jazz trumpeter, composer and bandleader Wynton Marsalis not only makes his Verbier Festival debut this year, but does so in the form of a residency that promises to showcase the tremendous breadth and scope of his musical personality and activity; and while over the coming days we’ll be hearing him and his music in truly large scale orchestral form – not least via his new trumpet concerto, a festival co-commission – tonight he introduces himself through the intimacy of small jazz ensemble, a genre into which he first immersed himself in 1980 as a member of The Jazz Messengers, studying under master drummer and bandleader Art Blakey, and in 1981 made his own through the formation of the highly successful band with which he then set about rekindling widespread interest in jazz around the world.
