Wynton Marsalis’ first ballet score, “Griot New York,” will premiere today at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival.
Choreographed by Garth Fagan and with sets by sculptor Martin Puryear, the piece is an ultra-modern fusion of Afro-Caribbean dance and classical styles. The title refers to the ancient African tradition of oral history – as kept by a person know as a griot – transposed into the 20th century.
