The Jungle (Symphony No. 4) was commissioned and premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 2016 and serves as Wynton Marsalis’s depiction of New York as super highway. “New York City is the most fluid, pressure-packed, and cosmopolitan metropolis the modern world has ever seen,” says Pulitzer Prize–winner Wynton Marsalis. “The speed, freedom, and intensity of our relationships to each other — and to the city itself — forces us onto a collective super highway unlike any other in our country.”
The work will be performed in its entirety for the first time in 2019 and this special performance will be one of only a handful of performances to occur around the world in 2019. Having worked together for the preview performance of Wynton Marsalis’s Violin Concerto in D with the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra in 2015, conductor and collaborator Cristian Măcelaru returns to Chautauqua to join jazz legend Marsalis with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
