The music of Thelonious Monk is playful, endlessly inventive, and a cornerstone of modern jazz. The incomparable JLCO celebrates Monk’s music as Wynton Marsalis discusses how this innovative pianist and composer pioneered the bebop style, and how his life reflected larger trends in 20th century African American history. We’ll also break down the ritual of the jam session, and learn why Marsalis calls the big band a model for American democracy. Suggested for grades 1–8.
