Big Band Holidays

Here are ten of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s holiday arrangements, in a complete six chart set at over 10% off of the retail prices.
These charts come from their two Big Band Holidays I and II records, and with one piece each by Wynton Marsalis, Chris Crenshaw, Ted Nash, Carlos Henriquez, Victor Goines, Vincent Gardner, and two from Sherman Irby, this set gives a wide and deep look at the varying styles and abilities of some of the musicians who make up one of the world’s best jazz ensembles. With various styles and difficulty levels, vocals and instrumental, this is a diverse and vibrant set of holiday music.

Originally written to feature vocalist Gregory Porter, this Chris Crenshaw arrangement is an excellent holiday vehicle for your husky-voiced male singer. Although there are plenty of classic-sounding big band moments, the performance as a whole should have an appropriately reverential quality to it as well. Be sure to pay careful attention to the multiple shifts in tempo, feel, and key throughout the chart. In addition to several short written solos in the ensemble, there is an optional open section for improvised choruses as well.

Arranged by Vincent Gardner.
This Vincent Gardner arrangement of one of the best-known traditional holiday tunes makes itself stand out via its unique straight-8ths waltz feel. Originally featuring vocalist Cecile McLorin-Salvant, the ensemble portions weave around the lyrics and frequently employ many Ellington-inspired touches, including plunger-wielding brass and upper-register woodwinds, although the overall harmonic content is decidedly modern. There is a short piano solo written into the arrangement, as well as an extended vamp for vocal improvisation at the end.

Arranged by Victor Goines.
Made famous by the legendary Louis Armstrong, this Christmas favorite was arranged by Victor Goines and recorded by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Rene Marie and released on their 2015 Big Band Holidays album. Featured are solos for trumpet, alto saxophone, and scat vocals trading with both alto saxophone and tenor saxophone. The vocal key is Db.

Featuring vocalist Gregory Porter on the original JALC recording, Sherman Irby’s arrangement of Merry Christmas, Baby delivers a musical holiday present in the form of a deeply bluesy, hard-grooving performance from top to bottom. Largely a vocal feature, the primary instrumental solos are for alto sax (bantering with the band) and tenor sax (as vocal accompaniment), but there is plenty of room to open things up for additional soloists as well. The trombone section also gets a nice, plunger-mute-heavy soli spotlight alongside the first vocal melody statement. Brass ranges are not overly high, but due to the slow tempo and overall louder dynamics, it can be a little bit of an endurance test. The vocal key is F.
