    Well, I’d say this one calls for a toast: An item on my wish list for 2011 has actually come true. Last year—in this column on Dec. 27, 2010—I made a list of five ways that New York City could be a better place for the arts and audiences in the coming year. Admittedly, some of the wishes were improbable, such as a campaign alerting audiences that standing ovations aren’t the required response to every single show in town. Some things were practical: Why can’t there be an orderly, working cab stand at Lincoln Center?

Wynton Marsalis fans are invited to enjoy a New Orleans inspired meal and help Share Our Strength eradicate childhood hunger in America.  Participating restaurants across the country are serving New Orleans inspired “specials” on their menus this week and will donate a portion of the proceeds to Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry program.

  • “Marsalis and Clapton Play The Blues” to be released on September 2011

    New York City’s premier jazz venue got the blues last April when Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton performed together in Rose Theater at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center for two sold-out shows dedicated to vintage blues. The extraordinary collaboration, billed as Wynton Marsalis & Eric Clapton Play the Blues, paired these musical virtuosos with members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as they brought to life a repertoire of songs selected by Clapton and arranged by Marsalis.

  • Wynton Marsalis & Eric Clapton Played The Blues at Jazz at Lincoln Center

    Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton collaborated forces this past weekend at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater, to explore the shared musical ground between New Orleans, the Delta and Chicago. Joined by eight other stellar musicians, including members of Marsalis’ quintet, Marsalis and Clapton performed the works of W.C. Handy, Louis Armstrong, Howlin’ Wolf, Big Maceo and more. The songs were selected by Clapton, while Marsalis’ arrangements embodied the authentic New Orleans sound of King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band.

    “I pat myself on the back – it took a lot of courage to come here,” Eric Clapton said halfway through his show at New York’s Rose Hall on April 8th, glancing and smiling at the men with him on stage: eight members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, including trumpeter and JALC artistic director Wynton Marsalis. Clapton then introduced the next song, nodding over his shoulder at bassist Carlos Henriquez. “This one was foisted on me by Carlos,” the British guitarist said. “I didn’t think it would work.”   Keep reading »
