    On January 9 and 10, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis explores its big band roots. Partly inspired by Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Managing & Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis’ Harvard University lecture, “Setting the Communal Table: The Evolution of the Jazz Orchestra”, delivered on September 26, 2013, the Birth of the American Orchestra concerts will explore the development of the American orchestra through the syncopated dance beats of New Orleans, innovative ensemble virtuosity, and the monumentality of swing and the blues.

    Benny Carter spread his aesthetic throughout jazz from the 1920s to the 1960s, and he did it in a number of ways. Jazz exists first in the public imagination through its soloist stars, and from the mid-’20s onward Carter was a great improviser — first on alto saxophone, then on trumpet — though he didn’t satisfy anyone’s picture of a jazz genius as a troubled, mercurial man-child; he was private and professional.   Keep reading »

    From October 15-21, Jazz at Lincoln Center opens the 2007-08 season with the Benny Carter Centennial throughout Frederick P. Rose Hall on Broadway at 60th St. in New York City . Wynton with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will perform the music of this legendary jazz musician on October 19 & 20, 2007. Anchor and Managing Editor of “NBC Nightly News” Brian Williams will host the October 19th concert and former New York Giants running back and “Today Show” correspondent Tiki Barber will host the October 20th concert.
