  • Wynton Marsalis on Woodlawn Cemetery’s “Jazz Corner”

    Jazz great after Jazz great has requested to be buried near “Duke” Ellington. So now, Miles Davis, Celia Cruz, Lionel Hampton, Max Roach, and many others can all be found in Woodlawn Cemetery’s unofficial “Jazz Corner.” A concert at Woodlawn is being held tonight in celebration of these Jazz giants. Wynton Marsalis, trumpeter, composer, and Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Susan Olson, Woodlawn Cemetery historian, weigh in on their legacy and NYC’s jazz history.   Keep reading »

    Here at home in New Orleans, we have a tradition of starting important gigs by calling out the names of legendary musicians from the past. In evoking the memory of legendary artists, this roll call inspires a higher level of performance. In 2007, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra went on tour with Odaadaa!, a group from Ghana led by master drummer Yacub Addy. Each concert started with a long roll call of distinguished ancestors chanted and spoken in Ga, their native tongue. At the end of the chant, Mr. Addy would say “Trah trah o manyaba.” Whereupon we would say Yow!

  • JALC Partners With Harlem Children’s Zone And Mr. Aubrey’s Show Kids To Present Uptown Family Swing

    On June 14 at 5:00pm, Jazz at Lincoln Center will partner with The Harlem Children’s Zone to present Uptown Family Swing, a free community concert featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and Mr. Aubrey’s Show Kids. Director and choreographer Aubrey Lynch II will choreograph a group of students ages 8 to17 from various Harlem and Washington Heights schools, including Harlem Children’s Zone, who will dance to music performed by the JLCO with Wynton Marsalis. In addition, dance students from various New York City dance institutions, including Steps on Broadway, The Ailey School, and American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School, will participate in the concert.

    When you think about traditional street performers, you might not imagine them dancing with the legendary New York City Ballet. But one dancer who has done just that.
    Jookin’ is a Memphis street dance usually performed to rap music, CBS News cultural correspondent Wynton Marsalis explained. But when Charles “Lil Buck” Riley got hold of it, he added a style and grace all his own. And now he’s taking that dance form from the streets to the world stage.

  • JLCO with Wynton Marsalis Hosts: Christian McBride & Kurt Rosenwinkel

    On May 23–24, Jazz at Lincoln Center presents its second JLCO Hosts concerts featuring a collaborating between the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and two of contemporary jazz’s finest artists. Music director Wynton Marsalis and drummer Ali Jackson present the compositions of a pair of Philadelphia-born, post-Boomer virtuosos— bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel. Associates since the 1980s, both Rosenwinkel and McBride attended Creative and Performing Arts High School in Philadelphia where they expanded their musical network with future Philly greats like Joey DeFrancesco and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson of The Roots.
