Music From Pakistan:
Featuring Sachal Jazz Ensemble, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis
Collaboration Marks Sachal Jazz Ensemble’s U.S. Performance Debut
November 22-23, 2013 in Rose Theater, 8pm
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will collaborate with the Sachal Jazz Ensemble, marking the Ensemble’s U.S. debut performance.
Master musicians from Pakistan, the Sachal Jazz Ensemble incorporates ancient instruments, such as sitar, sarod, tabla, and dholak into the sounds and rhythms of iconic jazz repertoire. This Ensemble’s unique rendition of the Dave Brubeck standard “Take Five” went viral on YouTube with more than half a million views to date. This collaboration is JALC’s latest installment in a string of cross-cultural investigations, touching upon Ghana and Spain, among others, through which the organization actualizes its mission to make jazz available globally by interweaving the sounds of jazz with an international array of musical styles. 2012 Oscar-winning film director Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is currently filming a documentary about this remarkable ensemble, and will capture footage from these performances for the film, which is slated for release in 2014.
