The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis dedicates an evening to the immensely popular Irving Berlin, once called “the greatest songwriter that has ever lived” by George Gershwin. With classics like “God Bless America,”“I’ll Be Loving You Always,” “Count Your Blessings,” “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” and“Let’s Face the Music and Dance,” it will be a big-band showcase of timeless great American Songbook, Broadway, and Hollywood hits.

The show will open with a series of authentic big-band charts originally written and performed by the likes of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Mary Lou Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Fletcher Henderson, Paul Whiteman, Gil Evans, and more. Played by the JLCO with effortlessly swinging authority, these timeless pieces will reflect decades of popular American music and culture.

For the second half of the evening, members of the JLCO will premiere their newly written arrangements of additional staples from the Berlin songbook, including “Supper Time, “How Deep is the Ocean,” and “In Walked Bud,” Thelonious Monk’s iconic variation of Berlin’s “Blue Skies.”

From its ties to the artistic and intellectual excitement of the Harlem Renaissance, to the patriotic resilience found during the Great Depression and World War I and II, to the glamorous stages and sets of Fred Astaire, Irving Berlin’s music is essential to so much of American music history, and it never goes out of style!
