The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is known for showcasing an impressive musical range during any given performance, and tonight’s concert takes that to a new level, offering two distinct shows in a single evening.

First, the JLCO will revisit one of its most timely original suites, Walter Blanding’s The Happiness of Being. A hit when it was first debuted, The Happiness of Being isBlanding’s musical reflection on the meaning of freedom. Written exclusively for the JLCO, the ambitious piece is a powerful addition to the band’s collection of expertly crafted originals.
Blanding and the JLCO will then round out the first half of the show with several of the most gripping and thought-provoking pieces of the 1960s, with compositions selected from the masterworks of John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, Sonny Rollins, and Charles Mingus.

For the second half of the concert, Wynton Marsalis will perform new music with his small group in Rose Theater for the first time in many years. Continuing with the theme of “freedom,” Marsalis will debut new tunes contemplating what the concept means to him. Though his small groups are as popular as ever on record and on the major festival circuit, it’s an extremely rare treat to have them perform here at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Fans wanting to see Marsalis front-and-center should take full advantage of this opportunity!
