  • Swing Symphony review: The strings swing in Wynton Marsalis’ jazz history

    Jazz, like all improvisational idioms, is a dialogue, and it is this element that Wynton Marsalis especially emphasises in his Swing Symphony – that and the rhythm implicit in the title. Marsalis’​ third symphony is a seven-movement work for unamplified jazz band and orchestra, and the dialogue begins by having the 15-piece Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra embedded in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the former’s horns a nugget of gold amid the strings.   Keep reading »

    Way back in 1999 Wynton Marsalis pulled in the biggest crowd for a jazz evening at the Perth Concert Hall. The choir stalls were filled to bursting, there was not a seat to be had even in the upper galleries and chairs were put on the stage next to the musicians, with audience members literally in their faces.   Keep reading »

  • Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra Announces 2016 Blue Engine International Tour

    The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, “the greatest large jazz ensemble working today” (Chicago Tribune), will perform a stylistic range of material with a host of guest artists throughout 15 international cities in 40 days. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis 2016 Blue Engine International Tour, named for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s new platform, Blue Engine Records, begins on February 4 in Paris, France and will conclude on March 12 in Wellington, New Zealand.   Keep reading »

    The second of two area concerts by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis was a hybrid affair, with a rather brief intermission separating a tribute to Duke Ellington by JLCO’s 16 players and a performance by the combined forces of the JLCO and the Cleveland Orchestra, led by William Eddins, of Marsalis’ “Swing Symphony.”  The result was certainly a feast of music, even if there was more of it than an audience could digest at a single setting.   Keep reading »

  • Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra tours Mexico, Puerto Rico, South America and U.S. Virgin Islands

    Jazz at Lincoln Center’s current season concerts and events celebrate the influence that the rich musical traditions of the Caribbean, North, South, and Central America have had on jazz throughout its history. The organization announces that the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will launch the 2015 Jazz Across The Americas Tour with concerts at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater on February 27 and 28. This landmark tour will bring the Jazz Times and DownBeat Readers Poll winning big band to Mexico City, St. Thomas, San Juan, and South American cities Buenos Aires, Caracas, Lima, Montevideo, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, and São Paolo throughout March 2015.
