  • Marsalis gets Double H kids in the groove

    Jazz great trumpeter Wynton Marsalis brought five members of his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, which debuts tonight at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center with the Philadelphia Orchestra in Marsalis’ “Swing Symphony,” to play and do a bit of music education for the 137 youngsters at the ranch. The band’s appearance was the first time jazz musicians had come to the venue as well as representing a new partnership for SPAC.   Keep reading »

    Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Rockefeller Foundation have announced a new education outreach program for students in disadvantaged schools. The program, “Jazz for Young People: The Resilient Cities Tour,” will connect live jazz performances to an American history curriculum, reaching 60 schools in five cities: Chicago; New Orleans; St. Louis; San Juan, P.R.; and Sydney, Australia.   Keep reading »

    No event in Orchestra Hall’s jazz season generates greater anticipation or larger audiences than a residency by Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
    And none of this year’s three concerts, starting Friday, will make a bigger impact on the future than the Saturday matinee, a Jazz for Young People program. For during the course of this event, Marsalis won’t just play with his formidable ensemble but also will discuss the music, aiming his commentary at young listeners unfamiliar with jazz, as well as those already smitten.
