  • Wynton about the three-day Katrina observance

    New Orleans will observe the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina as only America’s most musical city can, with a jazz funeral.
    Wynton Marsalis and Mayor Ray Nagin announced Friday afternoon the three-day observance, set for Aug. 27-29, promising details later.
    Wynton and the city’s musicians will lead the procession from the Convention Center to the Superdome in the tradition of a jazz funeral. The grand marshal will be Lt. Gen. Russell Honore, who arrived the Thursday after the Aug. 29 storm to lead the federal troops who followed.

  • Drum Major Institute to honor Wynton Marsalis

    On June 22, Wynton will be honored with the 2006 Drum Major for Justice Award.
    The event is organized by the Drum Major Institute for Public Policy and will take place in New York, on June 22, at Lotus (409 West 14th Street).

  • Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra renamed

    The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the house orchestra of Jazz at Lincoln Center, will henceforth be known as the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. The change will help identify the band, which is led by Wynton, more closely with the organization’s “worldwide brand,”.

    Wynton Marsalis will return to New Orleans to produce a television special marking the hurricane’s anniversary.
    Wynton and his production partner Lisa Marie Hoggs will team with producers John Cossette and Don Mischer to helm “New Orleans: Rebuilding the Soul of America One Year Later,” a live television special taking place at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center.

  • Jazz at Lincoln Center Announces winners of Essentially Ellington Competition 2006

    Essentially Ellington culminated in tonight’s concert at Avery Fisher Hall, at which each of the three top-placing bands performed two Ellington compositions, one alone and one with Jon Faddis, as guest soloist. Conductor, composer and educator, Mr. Faddis is the Director of the Chicago Jazz Ensemble and studied under the great Dizzy Gillespie. The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra then performed a set of Ellington compositions that Jazz at Lincoln Center will distribute to high schools for Essentially Ellington 2007.   Keep reading »

  • Wynton to Receive Honorary Juilliard Doctorates

    Seven honorary doctorates will be presented at Juilliard’s 101st commencement ceremony, which officially ends the School’s centennial season, on Friday, May 26, in Alice Tully Hall. Receiving the degrees will be composer Milton Babbitt; dancer/choreographer Pina Bausch; theater director and outgoing Richard Rodgers Director of the Drama Division, Michael Kahn; violinist Robert Mann; Wynton Marsalis, who will be the commencement speaker; Juilliard trustee Elizabeth McCormack; and philanthropist Martin E. Segal.

  • Latest about Wynton’s lips problem

    Due to a recurring inflammation of his lip, Wynton has been advised by his doctor to take several weeks off from playing the trumpet and so regretfully will have to cancel some of his scheduled engagements. It is Wynton’s hope that by resting now, he will avoid having this problem come up again.

  • Jazz ABZ at Hamilton Community Theatre

    The new Hamilton Community Theatre will present Jazz ABZ, a musical revue based on the book by Wynton Marsalis, April 2 and 9. The production is directed by Randy Forester. Musical direction is provided by Robert Crabtree who performs jazz keyboard and conducts the band.
