December 2nd 2010 New York City My great uncle was born in 1890. He was an artisan who cut the names and last statements of the deceased into their resting stones. I lived with him for the entirety of my 6th year and visited on many weekends. He taught me so many valuable lessons passed down from ‘old folks sometime long ago’ in stories, songs and folkways. My experiences with him saved me from falling into the generation gap. I return in my mind always to his shotgun house on Gov. Wynton Marsalis will be a featured High-Impact speaker at the 70th Annual National School Board Association (NSBA) Conference in Chicago on Sunday, April 11, 2010. The Pulitzer Prize-winning, Arts education advocate will speak to Board Members, Superintendents and other school official representing over 1,500 of the nation’s largest school districts accounting for over 18 million school children. Wynton to play and speak in Atlanta
Wynton now is in Atlanta to rehearse with his quintet and members of Atlanta Simphony Orchestra. On Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Woodruff Arts Center – Symphony Hall, they will perform music from the CDs “The Midnight Blues” and “Hot House Flowers”, featuring Wynton, Walter Blanding on saxophone, Dan Nimmer on piano, Carlos Henriquez on bass, and Ali Jackson on drums. Wynton is going to speak at the Tribeca Film Festival
Jazz at Lincoln Center is proudly associated with the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival premiere of Chops, a documentary film directed by Bruce Broder that follows a Florida high school jazz band’s journey to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival. Special press screenings will take place on: Thursday, April 26th at 10am, Clearview Chelsea West, theatre 1. Following this screening, Wynton will participate in a Q&A session with the filmmakers.
