  • Wynton back on stage for the Lincoln Center’s spring gala

    Wynton Marsalis played the trumpet on Monday night at the Apollo Theater after a monthlong hiatus caused by a lip inflammation. The occasion was Jazz at Lincoln Center’s fifth annual spring gala, which featured guest performances by Joe Cocker, Tracy Chapman, John Mayer, John Legend and Natalie Merchant. Throughout the evening Wynton was onstage with his septet, which served as a house band.   Keep reading »

    Wynton and Curtis Stigers will headline the concert, All That Jazz: Now That’s HIP! At Rose Theater on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at 8pm. The Wynton Marsalis’ Septet and Curtis Stigers will present each of their two distinct approaches to jazz. For the first half of the night, Curtis Stigers will push the boundaries of conventional jazz with his strong voice and soothing saxophone. Mr. Stigers will be joined by Matthew Fries on Piano, Phil Palombi on Bass and Keith Hall on drums.     Garth Fagan and Wynton Marsalis have been friends for more than 20 years, and since 1991 have collaborated frequently. Wednesday night at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater, to open a run through Sunday of Garth Fagan Dance, Mr. Marsalis and his septet played live for a lovely revival of their first collaboration, “Griot New York,” first seen at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.   Keep reading »
