  • Wynton to play with Ahmad Jamal at JALC

    On September 18-20 at 8 p.m., Jazz at Lincoln Center opens its 2008-09 season, with master of jazz piano, Ahmad Jamal, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis performing in Rose Theater. On these special evenings, Ahmad Jamal performs with his quartet and also big band arrangements of his tunes which may include “The Aftermath,” “Devil’s In My Den,” “Should I,” Horace Silver’s “Strollin’” and Monty Alexander’s “You Can See” with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.   • Wynton to start the USA Summer tour with JLCO

    On June 20, 2008, Wynton and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) will start the 2008 USA Summer tour from Ottawa (from June 20 through July 14). They will also play in Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Victoria, etc.. Check the complete tour schedule with more info about venues.   • Winners of Essentially Ellington 2008 played with Wynton and JLCO

    Two high school jazz bands from Seattle took home the top honors in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 13th Annual Essentially Ellington competition that culminated with a Saturday night concert where they performed with Wynton Marsalis as guest soloist. Wynton presented the first-place trophy to Scott Brown, director of the Roosevelt High School Jazz Band, during the awards ceremony and concert at Avery Fisher Hall. Seattle’s Garfield High School Jazz Band took second place, but it boasted the winner of the Outstanding Soloist Award in clarinetist and tenor saxophonist Carl Majeau.     On May 28, 2008, at 7:30 PM, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s annual Spring Gala concert, themed “Spring Swing,” features the soulful vocals of jazz chanteuse Patti Austin, with special guest Wynton Marsalis, performing selections from her 2008 GRAMMY – award winning album Avant Gershwin. A festive dinner (9:30 PM) will be held throughout Frederick P. Rose Hall venues following the concert. Proceeds from the evening will benefit Jazz at Lincoln Center’.     Last April 24, 25 & 26, 2008, at Rose Theater, during the “Tap Meets Flamenco” concert, Wynton the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra also performed selections from the Vitoria Suite, which the city of Vitoria (Spain) commissioned Wynton to write.
