  • Finalists Announced for 17th Annual Essentially Ellington 2012

    Jazz at Lincoln Center announces the 15 finalist bands and one winning community band for its prestigious 17th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival.  The bands will compete and participate in workshops, jam sessions, and more, during a three-day Competition & Festival in New York City.  The three top-placing bands perform with Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Wynton Marsalis, as guest soloist, followed by a performance by the 15-piece Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra - whose members serve as mentors for the finalist bands throughout the weekend.  The Festival’s finale is an awards ceremony honoring outstanding soloists, sections and the top three bands.  The Competition & Festival is the culmination of the annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Program (EE), which also includes regional festivals, teaching resources, a summer Band Director Academy, monthly newsletters, and more.    Keep reading »

  • Paul Simon & Wynton Marsalis Collaborate On “The Paul Simon Songbook”

    In a unique and historic collaboration, legendary musician and songwriter Paul Simon and Jazz at Lincoln Center Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis will perform together for three nights at concerts entitled “The Paul Simon Songbook.”  The premiere on April 18, 2012 will be Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2012 Annual Gala Concert and will be followed by two public concerts on April 19 and 20, 2012.   Keep reading »

    October 13, 2011 Wynton Marsalis turns 50 on October 18 and Live From Lincoln Center, which has featured Wynton and his music on a number of previous programs, will salute his milestone birthday with a special concert celebration, Wynton at 50. Joining him and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on stage will be other luminaries from the world of music and dance, including tap dancer Jared Grimes, vocalist Gregory Porter, pianist Marcus Roberts, violinist Marc O’Connor, Yacub Addy and Odadaa!, and Damien Sneed and Chorale Le Chateau.   • Tap Meets Flamenco at JALC

    On April 24, 25 & 26, 2008, at Rose Theater, in a special concert event called Tap Meets Flamenco, Spanish pianist Chano Dominguez performs his work De Cadi a New Orleans with his flamenco ensemble and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra also performs selections from The Vitoria Suite, which the city of Vitoria, Spain commissioned Wynton Marsalis to write and “Evolution of the Groove” featuring drummer Herlin Riley.   • Congo Square’s Sanctified Blues promoted at Stanford University

    The deal will allow Stanford faculty, staff, students and Lively Arts patrons to download music by artists featured in the upcoming Lively Arts season using free iTunes gift cards. From now through March 15, the cards will be made available to patrons at all Lively Arts performances and to customers at the Stanford Bookstore, Tresidder Express, the Track House Sport Shop, the Cantor Arts Center Gift Shop and the Stanford Shop at Stanford Shopping Center. Lively Arts plans to mail the cards to Stanford students, faculty and staff in early February and will make the cards available to its community partners, including the Palo Alto Unified School District and East Palo Alto’s educational program College Track.   Keep reading »

    Today, January 16, Wynton and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) are in Ann Arbour (MI) for the first performance of “Ellington Love Songs Tour” across North America (from January through Februry 12).
