    Three high school jazz bands took top honors on Sunday Night, May 10, in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 14th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival. Each band was chosen by a panel of judges composed of distinguished jazz musicians and historians — WYNTON MARSALIS, Jazz at Lincoln Center Artistic Director; composer, conductor and Ellington authority DAVID BERGER; educator, clinician and pianist, REGINALD THOMAS; and legendary jazz trumpeter and composer/arranger, GERALD WILSON— from among the 15 finalist bands from the U.S. and Canada that came to the Competition & Festival in New York City…   Keep reading »

  • Wynton to perform Jazz, Tap & Theater at JALC

    On April 16-28, 2009, Wynton and JLCO will perform new music for three concerts entitled: Jazz, Tap and Theater. It features music, dance, oration and world premiere music by trombonist Vincent Gardner. Wynton Marsalis’ “Spaces” will also be performed, five movements showcasing the tap dance of Dewitt Fleming Jr. and Jared Grimes. Gardner’s work, called the “Jesse B. Semple Suite,” is inspired by the great 20th century author Langston Hughes and his collection of “Simple Stories” about the fictional Jesse B.   • Finalists Announced for 14th Annual Essentially Ellington

    Jazz at Lincoln Center announces the 15 finalist bands for its prestigious 14th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival (May 2009). The bands will compete and participate in workshops, jam sessions and more, during the three-day competition and festival in New York City. The top-placing bands perform with Wynton Marsalis, as guest soloist, followed by a performance by the 15-piece Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra – all of whom serve as mentors for the finalist bands throughout the weekend.   • Norah Jones to play with Wynton and Willie Nelson

    Norah Jones will make a special guest appearance at the Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis concerts at Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center on February 9 and February 10 at 8 p.m. Norah Jones is scheduled to perform a selection of songs on both nights. The concert is part of Blue Note 70th Anniversary events taking place throughout New York.   • Wynton to play for Dr. George Butler at Dizzy’s Jazz Club

    On December 8, 2008, at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Wynton and his Quintet (Walter Blanding, sax; Dan Nimmer, piano; Carlos Henriquez, bass; Ali Jackson, drums) will play to remember Dr. George Butler. Mr. Butler, a prominent jazz record executive for the Columbia, Blue Note and United Artists labels from the late 1960s to the late 1990s, died last April 9, 2008.     This November 2008, Jazz at Lincoln Center celebrates the musical genius of Thelonious Monk. On November 15, at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM, Wynton and friends open the Monk Festival weekend by playfully exploring his unique musical universe. He will host Jazz for Young People: Who is Monk, in Rose Theater.     On November 6-7-8, 2009, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton and guest artists will transform traditional children’s songs and nursery rhymes with a big band twist.
