  • Wynton and Marcus Roberts celebrating Thelonious Monk at JALC

    This November 2008, Jazz at Lincoln Center celebrates the musical genius of Thelonious Monk. On November 15, at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM, Wynton and friends open the Monk Festival weekend by playfully exploring his unique musical universe. He will host Jazz for Young People: Who is Monk, in Rose Theater. On November 20-21-22, a very special concert entitled: The Music of Thelonious Monk, by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis presents big band arrangements of Monk’s idiosyncratic compositions and features one of the premiere interpreters of Monk’s music today with pianist Marcus Roberts.   • Wynton Marsalis Quintet and George Benson to perform at JALC Fall Gala

    On Monday, November 10, 2008, at 7 PM, the JALC Fall Gala 2008 evening begins with a concert in Frederick P. Rose Hall, featuring the music of the great Nat “King” Cole performed by Jazz and R&B singer George Benson. The Wynton Marsalis Quintet and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s will also perform.   • Wynton to play Nursery Song Swing at Jazz at Lincoln Center

    On November 6-7-8, 2009, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton and guest artists will transform traditional children’s songs and nursery rhymes with a big band twist. Performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center for the first time, Nursery Song Swing features new arrangements by members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Young guest artists Grace Kelly (age 16) on saxophone, Carl Majeau (age 17) on saxophone and Jonathan Russell (age 13) on violin, join the orchestra for this unique concert event.     On September 18-20 at 8 p.m., Jazz at Lincoln Center opens its 2008-09 season, with master of jazz piano, Ahmad Jamal, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis performing in Rose Theater.   • Winners of Essentially Ellington 2008 played with Wynton and JLCO

    Two high school jazz bands from Seattle took home the top honors in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 13th Annual Essentially Ellington competition that culminated with a Saturday night concert where they performed with Wynton Marsalis as guest soloist. Wynton presented the first-place trophy to Scott Brown, director of the Roosevelt High School Jazz Band, during the awards ceremony and concert at Avery Fisher Hall. Seattle’s Garfield High School Jazz Band took second place, but it boasted the winner of the Outstanding Soloist Award in clarinetist and tenor saxophonist Carl Majeau.     Jazz at Lincoln Center announced the Higher Ground Hurricane Relief Benefit Concert and auction on Saturday, September 17 at 7pm. The benefit will be held at the Rose Theater located inside the Frederick P. Rose Hall on Broadway and 60th Street, New York City.

  • Jazz at Lincoln Center hosts the Higher Ground Hurricane Relief Concert

    Jazz at Lincoln Center announced plans to produce the Higher Ground Hurricane Relief Benefit Concert. Premiering on Saturday, September 17 at 7pm, the event will be held in the Rose Theater on 60th street and Broadway. The concert will seek to raise funds for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Bill Cosby will host the concert with Wynton Marsalis, Peter Cincotti, Elvis Costello, Paquito D’Rivera, Abbey Lincoln, Diana Krall, Jon Hendricks and more to be announced.
