Wynton in the new Spike Lee film about Katrina
Entitled: When the Levees Broke, Spike Lee’s emotionally haunting two-night chronicle of Hurricane Katrina is a documentary masterpiece, unfolding over four hours tonight and at 9 p.m. Tuesday. Deftly mixing news footage of the harrowing devastation as tragic events unfolded late last August and early September, Lee adds an unforgettably rich human tapestry of witness interviews. Wynton offers a brief history of the city’s culture and the special way music is embedded in the fabric of New Orleans life. The film is structured in four acts, each dealing with a different aspect of the events that preceded and… Keep reading »

Wynton interviewed by Fortune Magazine
Fortune magazine choosed 12 highly successful people to share thoughts and advice on how they work and what makes them successful. Wynton Marsalis is amongst them: Executive summary: Challenge each other — but don’t hold grudges. You don’t want trumpet players and musicians being your primary business decision-makers. It’s not possible for me to do that and write music, program the season, and conduct the band. I really do let people do their jobs, so when we come together, we know what each is supposed to do. But I weigh in on everything. I’ve never sent an e-mail.… Keep reading »

Wynton’s interview and photo from Yokohama
YOKOHAMA, Japan — Wynton was halfway through an explanation of whether he thinks his hometown, New Orleans, will ever really come back from the devastation of last summer’s Hurricane Katrina when he stopped and shifted direction. He got stranded in Chicago, he said, on his way over to Japan for a week of workshops for kids. With nowhere in particular to go, he just naturally hooked up with another New Orleans native living there. He was given a place to stay, then treated to New Orleans food. The conversation was all about New Orleans. He found out his host, an… Keep reading »
