    Jazz at Lincoln Center announces the 15 finalist bands and one winning community band for its prestigious 16th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival. The bands will compete and participate in workshops, jam sessions, and more, during a three-day Competition & Festival in New York City. The three top-placing bands perform with Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Wynton Marsalis, as guest soloist, followed by a performance by the 15-piece Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.   Keep reading »

    Jazz at Lincoln Center will welcome the 15 finalist bands and the winning community band to prestigious 15th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival. The bands will compete and participate in workshops, jam sessions, and more during a three-day Competition & Festival in New York City.     Three high school jazz bands took top honors on Sunday Night, May 10, in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 14th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival. Each band was chosen by a panel of judges composed of distinguished jazz musicians and historians — WYNTON MARSALIS, Jazz at Lincoln Center Artistic Director; composer, conductor and Ellington authority DAVID BERGER; educator, clinician and pianist, REGINALD THOMAS; and legendary jazz trumpeter and composer/arranger, GERALD WILSON— from among the 15 finalist bands from the U.S. and Canada that came to the Competition & Festival in New York City…   Keep reading »

  • Winners of Essentially Ellington 2008 played with Wynton and JLCO

    Two high school jazz bands from Seattle took home the top honors in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 13th Annual Essentially Ellington competition that culminated with a Saturday night concert where they performed with Wynton Marsalis as guest soloist. Wynton presented the first-place trophy to Scott Brown, director of the Roosevelt High School Jazz Band, during the awards ceremony and concert at Avery Fisher Hall. Seattle’s Garfield High School Jazz Band took second place, but it boasted the winner of the Outstanding Soloist Award in clarinetist and tenor saxophonist Carl Majeau.     Wynton Marsalis didn’t mind losing sleep for some high school band members.
