    When Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra climaxed their concert Thursday night at the Rose Theater with “Rhapsody in Blue,” they were, in a very literal sense, settling an old score. The last time the JALCO played the “Rhapsody” was in November, at an all-Gershwin Gala. That treatment featured the pianist Marcus Roberts as star soloist, but, through no fault of the orchestra or Mr. Roberts, it had to be the worst version of Gershwin’s classic that I’ve ever heard.   Keep reading »

  • Marsalis and company play ‘Songs We Love’

    If you were lucky enough to score a ticket to Saturday night’s Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis concert, then you heard a pristine performance from a group of world-class musicians. The program presented by the orchestra was called “The Songs We Love,” and it was filled with well-known Jazz and Big Band standards.

  • Wynton’s concert with Willie Nelson on XM Radio

    Jazz at Lincoln Center and XM Radio announced, that “Willie Sings the Blues, ” a concert performed by the legendary singer-songwriter-musician Willie Nelson and the Wynton Marsalis Quintet in January 2007 will be broadcast exclusively on XM Friday, April 6th at 7p.m. ET in celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month.
    The concert will be broadcast simultaneously on XM’s traditional country channel, “Willie’s Place” (XM 13), and XM’s traditional jazz channel, “Real Jazz” (XM 70), with additional encores airing throughout the weekend.

    Like Howard Beale in Network, Wynton Marsalis is mad as hell and he’s not gonna take it anymore. Of course, the 45-year-old trumpeter-bandleader and celebrated jazz ambassador has always been riled and outraged, ever since he was an audacious, outspoken kid back in New Orleans. And over the course of the past 20 years, he has always spoken his mind in interviews or in casual conversation. Like his equally unguarded brother Branford, you know where Wynton stands. He pulls no punches, never attempts to obfuscate. Like him or not, he’s painfully direct, unwavering in his convictions.
