    On April 7, 8, 9, 2008, Wynton rehearsed with JLCO and the Choir for Abyssinian 200: A Celebration. Yesterday night, the new Mass was premiered at Rose Theater (JALC).   • Finalists announced for 13th Annual Essentially Ellington 2008

    Jazz at Lincoln Center announced the 15 finalist bands for its prestigious 13th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival. The bands will compete and participate in workshops, jam sessions and more, during the three-day competition and festival in New York City. The top-placing bands perform with Wynton Marsalis, as guest soloist, followed by a performance by the 15-piece Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra – all of whom serve as mentors for the finalist bands throughout the weekend.     Wednesday, March 19, 2008, Marian McPartland celebrated her 90th birthday in a style befitting the “Grande Dame of Piano Jazz” with a little help from friends including Norah Jones and Wynton Marsalis at Jazz at Lincoln Center. “Getting up here is really a job,” quipped McPartland, who has been slowed by arthritis in her legs and is recovering from a fractured pelvis, after being assisted onstage.     Yesterday, March 4, 2008, Wynton with Executive Director Adrian Ellis and Chairman of the Board Lisa Schiff announced the 2008-09 JALC season, featuring over 3,000 events including concerts, education events, broadcasts, worldwide touring (see attached chronology) and new partnership with MasterCard Worldwide. The 2008-09 season marks the organization’s 22nd season of programming and the fifth season in its home, Frederick P. Rose Hall.   • Wynton is composing a new orchestral piece

    The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) and Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) have commissioned Wynton to compose a new orchestral piece. At the request of Wynton, ASO Music Director Robert Spano will serve as Wynton’s personal composition mentor, and will lead the ASO in the world premier performance during the NBAF’s 20th Anniversary season. Rehearsals: July 17-18. Performances: July 19. Wynton will also compose a new work for combined symphonic and jazz orchestras for Michigan State University’s Wharton Center and the Detroit Symphony.
