  • Wynton to perform new piece for MSU and Detroit Symphony

    Wynton has been commissioned by the Michigan State University College of Music, MSU’s Wharton Center for Performing Arts and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra to create a new piece of music that celebrates Michigan. The world premiere of the piece will be performed by Wynton with the MSU Symphony Orchestra and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24 in the Cobb Great Hall at the Wharton Center.     For one extraordinary week only, December 17-21, 2008, Wynton and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) will join with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for a live music celebration of America’s two great art forms – modern dance and jazz music. Featuring two programs full of Duke Ellington’s most glorious orchestrations for dance, this special week is a highlight of Ailey’s 50th anniversary season at New York City Center, December 3 through January 4.   • Wynton to play and speak in Atlanta

    Wynton now is in Atlanta to rehearse with his quintet and members of Atlanta Simphony Orchestra. On Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Woodruff Arts Center – Symphony Hall, they will perform music from the CDs “The Midnight Blues” and “Hot House Flowers”, featuring Wynton, Walter Blanding on saxophone, Dan Nimmer on piano, Carlos Henriquez on bass, and Ali Jackson on drums.   • Wynton’s work with the Atlanta Symphony postponed

    Wynton has postponed the world premiere of his “American Symphony,” his first all-orchestral work. It was originally scheduled to be performed July 19 by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and conductor Robert Spano at the National Black Arts Festival, with repeat performances Nov. 6 and 7 during the ASO’s 2008-09 main season.   • Wynton to start the USA Summer tour with JLCO

    On June 20, 2008, Wynton and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) will start the 2008 USA Summer tour from Ottawa (from June 20 through July 14). They will also play in Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Victoria, etc.. Check the complete tour schedule with more info about venues.   • Winners of Essentially Ellington 2008 played with Wynton and JLCO

    Two high school jazz bands from Seattle took home the top honors in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 13th Annual Essentially Ellington competition that culminated with a Saturday night concert where they performed with Wynton Marsalis as guest soloist. Wynton presented the first-place trophy to Scott Brown, director of the Roosevelt High School Jazz Band, during the awards ceremony and concert at Avery Fisher Hall. Seattle’s Garfield High School Jazz Band took second place, but it boasted the winner of the Outstanding Soloist Award in clarinetist and tenor saxophonist Carl Majeau.   • Wynton to play in Marciac 2008 with his Septet, Quintet and Richard Galliano

    On August 8 and 13, 2008, Wynton will play at Marciac Jazz Festival with his Septet and Quintet. The first concert will be performed at the Chapiteau by his Septet: Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts (to be confirmed), Reginald Veal, Herlin Riley, Wess Anderson, Wycliffe Gordon and Victor Goines. The second performance will take place on August 13 and will feature the Quintet: Wynton Marsalis, Dan Nimmer, Carlos Henriquez, Walter Blanding, Ali Jackson, with Richard Galliano.   • Tap Meets Flamenco at JALC

    On April 24, 25 & 26, 2008, at Rose Theater, in a special concert event called Tap Meets Flamenco, Spanish pianist Chano Dominguez performs his work De Cadi a New Orleans with his flamenco ensemble and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra also performs selections from The Vitoria Suite, which the city of Vitoria, Spain commissioned Wynton Marsalis to write and “Evolution of the Groove” featuring drummer Herlin Riley.
