  • Jazzing Up the Holidays at Dallas Symphony

    The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis is so far from the usual big-band cliché that it’s mind-blowing. A dozen of the finest jazz horn players in the nation performed with graceful vigor, enabled by an acoustic rhythm section of piano, bass and drums that imparted support and swing. At Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center on Thursday night as part of Dallas Symphony Orchestra Christmas Pops!, they enlivened tunes from the mid-1500s to modern, with exceedingly imaginative arrangements mostly generated by band members.

    Decked out in a white dress and blazing red high-heels, Salvant, who is only 25, walked out on the stage before a full house at FAMU’s Lee Hall Auditorium on Saturday night and let everyone know that she may be the best jazz vocalist of her generation.

  • Marsalis, Lincoln Center orchestra make season bright at Marcus Center

    You know it’s a good gig when you can’t tell if the band or the audience is having more fun.
    Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant and an Uihlein Hall audience shared a great time Monday with the band’s “Big Band Holidays” at the Marcus Center.
    The music, most of which was arranged by members of the band, was miles and miles from the trite pop arrangements cluttering the air this time of year. These were meaty, interesting takes on great tunes, each leaving plenty of room for band members to take solos.

    The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant celebrate “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” with a 3-week, 12-city Big Band Holidays U.S. Tour.  Kicking off the holiday season with messages of peace and good cheer, the Big Band Holidays U.S. Tour commences on December 1 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and ends on December 21 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Tour dates include four performances at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater at Frederick P. Rose Hall, located at Broadway at 60th Street in New York, New York.
