Celebrated for his contributions as a performer, composer, bandleader and educator, trumpeter Marsalis has won nine Grammy Awards. He is the only artist in history to have received Grammys for five consecutive years and to have received a Grammy for both jazz and classical music in the same year (1983). -

My great uncle was born in 1890. He was an artisan who cut the names and last statements of the deceased into their resting stones. I lived with him for the entirety of my 6th year and visited on many weekends. He taught me so many valuable lessons passed down from ‘old folks sometime long ago’ in stories, songs and folkways. My experiences with him saved me from falling into the generation gap. I return in my mind always to his shotgun house on Gov. Nicholls St. in New Orleans with its lack of hot water, 1930’s appliances, and big super-cooling house fan.

Wynton’s Closing Plenary Address for the Association of Performing Arts Presenters
I love to watch people enter a concert hall. I like to find some point right before the performance to see everybody coming in. Some on the first date. Some on the last. Some are celebrating some important milestone, anniversary, birthday. I’ve actually been performing long enough to have people come with their 4 kids and say “We actually met at one your concerts and our relationship survived your performance so that we can be here tonight.” I sometimes look at the audience entering and think of the timelessness of it all. Us going to an artistic performance of some kind to remember who we are, or to learn about it, or just to be aware of us in this present moment. I’m sure the human beings have been seeking the nourishment of arts since the very beginning of our consciousness. Keep reading »
