Wynton plays in the upcoming album by Mark O’Connnor
“In Full Swing” is Mark O’Connor’s tribute to Stephane Grappelli, the musician he describes as “my biggest violin hero.” His band, the Hot Swing Trio, features bassist Jon Burr, who toured with Grappelli for years, and guitarist Frank Vignola, one of the finest American players in the Django Reinhardt tradition.
The basic trio are expanded with Wynton Marsalis and vocalist Jane Monheit guest starring on three and four tracks, respectively. Wynton adds a distinctive voice to standards such as Tiger Rag as he slips and slides between classical and jazz modes.
But the collaboration between the trio and its guests reaches its apex on a gorgeous version of As Time Goes By, which finds the musical voices of Monheit, Marsalis and O’Connor interweaving to tremendous emotional effect.
