Wynton has been recently interviewed by Ed Bumgardner for the web site: WJBF NewsCHANNEL 6.

Quote from the interview: “Jazz is not about the best musician. It is about learning a musical and historical foundation, then using it to find yourself. If I am true to myself, then I am true to the music, and that makes everybody and everything sound better.”

Thaanks for the start to my day! I chuckled a number of times. Wynton has a way of saying everything in a few words. He talks about life, music and life purpose!! He makes a lot of sense (to me). So did the guy about the jump shot-and I'm not just talking about basketball! (I am a teacher and there are "Big Guys" in my profession too. Lots of them profess to know all BUT do very little with 'the little people'!!) Keep keepin it real, Baby! Love, me
Posted by me on 2005-04-15 14:04:51 I just love wnton's musicianship and class he has become a real seasoned player and performer on many levels. I have seen him graciously let people go because they thought they were so great after playing with Jazz a lLincoln center band that nobody could suggest anything to them regarding the bandstand or there performance1. the band nor wynton have that kind of attitude. they continue to learn and have a positive vibe around them. my question to you and to wynton i always ask myself. who determines first of all what and who is great? not always the POLITICAL critics! BUT LIKE WYNTONS QUOTE I TOO MUST ALWAYS BE TRUE TO MYSELF AND NOT ALWAYS THE FIRST TIME I HEAR SOMEONE IS HOW THEY PLAY ALL THE TIME. BECASEU MOST OF US WHO REALLY LOVE JAZZ CONTINE TO GROW.

I feel a seasoned musician and or singer may often bring a very high level of artistic creativity to the performance table. Many times I have met ,worked with, or spoken to musicians and singers who have master degrees in music and can recite every note in every given scale. But when they play or sing they play loud no respect to other players not really listenings. Or play or sing so rigid that they sound like a machine. Many times alot of them sound too much the same no heart no soul only notes on a paper. These same people cannot even play a harmony to melody by ear. So yes I agree with wynton to most of what he says. i also argue those of you who think you have learned it all no matter your age or experience, you are the ones i call STUPID. When you allow a musician or singer get away with bad pitch, bad timing and you as a musician who knows better do not let them know then who is really the stupid one? sometimes i will hire a new player becaseu he tends to listen better becase he or she doesn't feel they know it all. but on the other hand players who are not experience makes someone like me have to work a little harder and may not achieve swingin' and boppin'
