Jazz at Lincoln Center proudly opens the 2013–14 season with Ahmad Jamal & Wynton Marsalis on September 19–21 at 8pm in Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, Broadway at 60th Street, New York, New York.

NEA Jazz Master Ahmad Jamal, still in prime form in his ninth decade, is a leading architect of Miles Davis’ ‘50s quintet and a universal influence on piano trio vocabulary through his use of real-time cues, bass vamps, and intoxicating rhythms. For this special concert event, Jamal will embed his quartet, featuring Reginald Veal (bass), Herlin Riley (drums), along with Manolo Badrena (percussion), within the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will debut new arrangements of songs from Jamal’s canon, and the two bands will come together to perform them, employing Jamal’s innovative conception. A free pre-concert discussion will take place nightly at 7pm at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Irene Diamond Education Center.

Ahmad Jamal & Wynton Marsalis will be available via live web stream on September 19 at 8pmET on wyntonmarsalis.org/live.

On September 19, in a private Season Opening Reception, jazz lyricist and vocalist Jon Hendricks will be awarded The Satchmo™ Award created by the Louis Armstrong Education Foundation. The Satchmo™ Award represents a tribute to the life and legacy of Louis Armstrong’s passion for jazz and excellence matched only by his joyous love of life and children. The recipients of The Satchmo™ Award are selected for their important and lasting contributions in the world of music and jazz education. The recipients reflect the spirit of Louis Armstrong and his inspiring belief in the power of the language of music, essential in making a wonderful world.”

“Jon Hendricks has spent the last seventy five years learning and conceiving ways to make jazz and make listeners hear it better and more enjoyably,” said Stanley Crouch, Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation President. “His career included working with Art Tatum, Charlie Parker, Count Basie, and Thelonious Monk, to name but a few. When Jon Hendricks arrives, the timeless fact and mood of jazz is in the house, and a master among us.”
