  • On the Road…Davis, California

    Posted on June 15th, 2004 in Tour | 1

It’s hotter than Georgia asphalt on a summer day out here. Davis, California, home to University of California-Davis, is host to the quintet’s next performance. I just met up with the band; saw Mr. Marsalis after he came back from a basketball game. Right now the quintet is practicing in Wynton’s room, and then we’re off to sound check and the performance. Let’s hope the show finishes before the fourth quarter of the Lakers-Pistons game :) There is excitement in the air around the venue. It reminds me of Brent Reidy, a composer, who says of…   Keep reading »

  • After the feast

    Posted on June 15th, 2004 in Tour | 0

We just finished a meal of BBQ chicken, tangy salad, and Pepsi. Coming from Atlanta, I was a bit offended. It seems like Sacramento/Davis is a Pepsi bastion. After watching the opening ceremonies of the Pistons-Lakers game, we came back to the hotel to rest. I took some photos of the sound check. Have you heard of Mondavi? Yeah, the wine guy. The quintet is playing at a performing arts center named for Mondavi. The architecture is breathtaking. • A preview of Wynton Marsalis’ The Magic Hour

Posted on February 2nd, 2004 in Blue Note, CD, Tour | 0

As you know, Wynton will make his label debut with The Magic Hour, an upbeat, lyrical eight-song outing featuring his remarkable quartet – pianist Eric Lewis, bassist Carlos Henriquez and drummer Ali Jackson – and two special guests, Blue Note label mates Dianne Reeves and Bobby McFerrin. The new album will be in stores on March 9, 2004. But now, on the Bluenote web site, is possible to download a nice Flash animation that shows the new album cover and previews the tune with Bobby McFerrin.
