  • Wynton Marsalis Offers Thanks To Fans With Free Concert At Jazz Club

    NEW YORK – Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis offered thanks over the holiday weekend to fans who have stuck with him through the years by presenting a free concert in the intimate setting of Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center. About 130 tickets to Marsalis’ Fan Appreciation Concert were distributed randomly among the thousands of subscribers to his e-newsletter. An additional 14,000 fans watched a free live stream of Sunday night’s performance by Marsalis’ quintet on his Facebook page, according to his executive assistant, Meghan Thornton.     Music Director Robert Spano and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will perform the world premiere of American Symphony by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-musician Wynton Marsalis. One of Mr. Marsalis’s goals as a composer has been to write a new work exclusively for symphony orchestra. American Symphony is that work. Using six movements — March, Spiritual, Danzón, Ragtime, Blues and 4/4 Swing — the work displays a wide range of sound techniques.     Ornette Coleman makes his Jazz at Lincoln Center concert debut to open the 2009-10 season on September 26. For one night only, Coleman and his two bass band perform inventive compositions that continue to influence generations of jazz musicians. The band includes Ornette Coleman (alto saxophone, trumpet, violin), his son Denardo Coleman (drums), Anthony Falanga (acoustic bass), and Al McDowell (electric bass).
