  • Wynton performs in Toronto tonight

    The du Maurier Downtown Jazz Festival doesn’t officially begin until tomorrow, but tonight’s show by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis at the Hummingbird Centre is surely an appropriately swinging kickoff. The festival has been hanging in for 17 years now, despite funding crises, sponsorship snags, SARS fears and perennial complaints about the lineup, which often pales in comparison with its Montreal counterpart.   • Wynton plays with his new quartet

    On June 3 and 4, Wynton led a quartet at the Iron Horse for four packed shows Tuesday and Wednesday nights. He brought along pianist Eric Lewis, drummer Ali Jackson Jr., and bassist Carlos Enriquez, and the quartet performed a seven-tune set, followed by a single song encore. Most of the compositions played at the first Tuesday show were so new that Wynton hadn’t named them yet, and they included a sprightly New Orleans shuffle, a playful swing largely built around a one-note melody, and even one speedy “out”.   Keep reading »

    More than 830 people in attendance at the concert and dinner, including Sen. Charles Schumer, Glenn Close, Ellen Barkin, Al Roker, Deborah Roberts, Bobby Short, Courtney B. Vance, Walt “Clyde” Frasier, City Council Speaker Gifford Miller and the Reverend and Mrs. Calvin Butts, the gala raised more than $1.17 million. The proceeds will benefit the hundreds of performances and educational programs produced by Jazz at Lincoln Center each year.     B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Wynton Marsalis, Ray Charles, and Willie Nelson are among the artists who will play the Blowin’ the Blues Away, a concert to benefit Jazz at Lincoln Center. To be held tomorrow, June 2, at New York’s famed Apollo Theater, the event will celebrate the U.S. Congress-declared Year of the Blues and will articulate the development of the blues in jazz through narrative and song.   Keep reading »

  • Wynton and Ellis Marsalis play the music of James Black

    For five nights, from May 27 to 31 at Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse, Jazz at Lincoln Center will celebrate the music of James Black (1940-1988), the trailblazin drummer and composer, whose music remains largely unknown outside of his native New Orleans. Wynton and his father, pianist Ellis Marsalis will join other Native New Orleanians: Victor Goines, (tenor saxophone and clarinet), Reginald Veal (bass), and Herlin Riley (drums) for five nights of Black’s music which will help to close out J@LC’s “Year of the Drum” celebration.
