  • Music From Pakistan: Featuring Sachal Jazz Ensemble, JLCO with Wynton Marsalis

    The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will collaborate with the Sachal Jazz Ensemble, marking the Ensemble’s U.S. debut performance. Master musicians from Pakistan, the *Sachal Jazz Ensemble* incorporates ancient instruments, such as sitar, sarod, tabla, and dholak into the sounds and rhythms of iconic jazz repertoire. This Ensemble’s unique rendition of the Dave Brubeck standard “Take Five” went viral on YouTube with more than half a million views to date. This collaboration is JALC’s latest installment in a string of cross-cultural investigations, touching upon Ghana and Spain, among others, through which the organization actualizes its mission to make jazz available globally by interweaving the sounds of jazz with an international array of musical styles.   Keep reading »

    Since 1988, when Wynton Marsalis coalesced his septet with Duke Ellington alumni Jimmy Hamilton, Willie Cook, Jimmy Woode, Norris Turney, Britt Woodman, and Joe Temperley (still an active member of the JLCO and performer at this event) to form the first edition of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Ellington’s oeuvre has been fundamental to Marsalis’ mission and conception.     Stephen Sondheim and Wynton Marsalis are collaborating on a new show to be staged at the New York City Center next November that will feature jazz interpretations of Mr. Sondheim’s love songs. The show, “A Bed and a Chair: A New York Love Story,” marks the first time Mr. Sondheim, one of musical theater’s great lyricists and composers, and Mr. Marsalis, the master jazz trumpeter, have worked together.   Keep reading »

  • JLCO with Wynton Marsalis and guest artists reprise “Blood on the Fields”

    Jazz at Lincoln Center continues its 25th anniversary celebration with a special performance of Blood On The Fields, Wynton Marsalis’ Pulitzer prize-winning jazz oratorio.  Eighteen years after its premiere at Alice Tully Hall, the jazz oratorio on slavery and freedom will be performed by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.  Eric Reed, featured pianist on the premiere and original Blood On The Fields recording, joins the JLCO for this special concert event.  Blood on the Fields remains one of Marsalis’ greatest works and reinforces his dictum that “all jazz is modern.”  Rising star baritone Gregory Porter, scat-master Kenny Washington, and the great contralto Paula West reprise the vocal roles.    Keep reading »

    In a unique and historic collaboration, iconic rock trio Crosby, Stills & Nash and the world renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will perform together for the first time in Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P.
