Metropolitan Opera commissions new work from Wynton Marsalis and John Guare
The Metropolitan Opera has commissioned a new opera from Wynton and award-winning playwright John Guare. The project was revealed during an interview Met general manager Peter Gelb gave to Playbill.com yesterday. The venture is in its earliest stages, so no subject or working title has yet been chosen and no anticipated completion date has yet been set, according to a Met spokesperson. Wynton is preparing his fourth album for Blue Note
Wynton will go into the studio soon to record his fourth release for Blue Note. This time around Wynton will be recording an extended work still in progress entitled: From the Plantation to the Penitentiary. The musicians have not been confirmed yet but will most likely be a quartet or quintet joined by the young “chanteuse” Jennifer Sanon. Wynton’s brother Delfeayo Marsalis will be the producer. Brooks Brothers to release exclusive JLCO album
Brooks Brothers, the famous men’s clothier, has officially released its second CD in a series featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) with Wynton Marsalis. Cast of Cats contains twelve original tunes composed by Wynton and performed in small group sessions with members of the JLCO. Higher Ground benefit CD is in stores now
Today, Blue Note Records released Higher Ground, a CD that documents Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Higher Ground Hurricane Relief Benefit Concert, a landmark evening of musical offering that was mounted by Wynton on September 17, less than three weeks after Hurricane Katrina imparted its devastation upon the Gulf Coast.
