  • Wynton is preparing his fourth album for Blue Note

    Wynton will go into the studio soon to record his fourth release for Blue Note. This time around Wynton will be recording an extended work still in progress entitled: From the Plantation to the Penitentiary. The musicians have not been confirmed yet but will most likely be a quartet or quintet joined by the young “chanteuse” Jennifer Sanon.     Post production will be done later this month to prepare for release of a smokin’ live date featuring Wynton’s quartet along with some special guests. Recorded last year at the House Of Tribes in NYC the performance features altoman Wes Anderson, drummer Joe Farnsworth, bassist Carlos Henriquez, pianist Eric Lewis and percussionist Orlando Rodriguez, among others.   • Wynton Marsalis’ Unforgivable Blackness is in stores now !

    Available from Blue Note records from November 30 is Unforgivable Blackness, Wynton’s original score to the upcoming Ken Burns documentary of same name. (watch a preview) The film marks the second collaboration between filmmaker Burns and Wynton Marsalis (the first being 2000’s Jazz series, where Marsalis held the position of Senior Creative Consultant. Unforgivable Blackness tells the story of Jack Johnson, the first African-American Heavyweight Boxing World Champion, and is given historical context from 21 compositions covering pre-modern genres like blues, ragtime and Dixieland, where the ensembles’ embellishments and collective improvisations sound remarkably accurate.     As you know, Wynton will make his label debut with The Magic Hour, an upbeat, lyrical eight-song outing featuring his remarkable quartet – pianist Eric Lewis, bassist Carlos Henriquez and drummer Ali Jackson – and two special guests, Blue Note label mates Dianne Reeves and Bobby McFerrin. The new album will be in stores on March 9, 2004.
