    Anxiety abounds concerning the demands of our rapidly changing and ever more complicated world and about the ability of our educational system to respond. Yet the education we are fashioning for our children and their children seems ill-suited for the lives they will lead. We hear widespread calls for “outcomes” we can measure and for education geared to specific employment needs, but many of today’s students will hold jobs that have not yet been invented, deploying skills not yet defined. We not only need to equip them with the ability to answer the questions relevant to the world we now inhabit; we must also enable them to ask the right questions to shape the world to come.   Keep reading »

  • Music From Pakistan: Featuring Sachal Jazz Ensemble, JLCO with Wynton Marsalis

    The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will collaborate with the Sachal Jazz Ensemble, marking the Ensemble’s U.S. debut performance. Master musicians from Pakistan, the *Sachal Jazz Ensemble* incorporates ancient instruments, such as sitar, sarod, tabla, and dholak into the sounds and rhythms of iconic jazz repertoire. This Ensemble’s unique rendition of the Dave Brubeck standard “Take Five” went viral on YouTube with more than half a million views to date. This collaboration is JALC’s latest installment in a string of cross-cultural investigations, touching upon Ghana and Spain, among others, through which the organization actualizes its mission to make jazz available globally by interweaving the sounds of jazz with an international array of musical styles.   Keep reading »

  • Wynton Marsalis Goes Back To Church For ‘Abyssinian Mass’

    Wynton Marsalis is sipping hot tea in a church conference room before the evening’s performance. His custom-made Monette Raja trumpet — with its built-in mouthpiece and black opal inlays — sits by his side. He’s riffing on one of his favorite subjects: the universality of rhythm. “That rolling 6/8 rhythm is in African religious music, it’s in Anglican religious music,” he says, humming a complicated pattern and tapping his fingers on his notebook. “In a slower tempo it would be ‘Greensleeves.’” He scats the melody. “Now stay in that time, here’s the African 6/8 ... now let’s go into the jazz shuffle.” More tapping. “It’s the same rhythm.”   Keep reading »
