I’ve read reviews on the Swingin’ into the 21st Century release “Marsalis Plays Monk” and I didn’t like some of the comments I saw. They say Marsalis just plays through the Monk songbook and didn’t bring anything new to the music. I respect the fact that the septet just played the music and played it in their own style. I love Hackensack, Four into One, and Lets Cool One and Reflections are two of my very favorites. I recently played Ugly Beauty at a funeral for a friend of mine (I’m a clarinetist) and used Wynton’s rendition as a guide.
Comments on this excellent album…?
Thanks for replying…
