I dont know if Mr. Marsalis will ever read this but I just wanted to say, the way you play really inspires my hoofin alot.. im a newbie but I get the feeling of what I should do when I hear you laying it down, one of my real lifetime goals is to dance with you with you play just like how my tap fathers came before me….. The Nicolas Brothers with Cab Calloway and Baby Laurence with Charlie Parker…the list continues…. I want that feeling of being up there and really gettin it in and just keep that tradition alive of ” every jazz band had a tap dancer”...I mean outside of being able to dance for you and with you I want to learn about jazz in its entirety, I feel that your the one to possibly teach what I need to know about this great art and apply it to myself… I mean from history to rhythm, to bebop, up swing, ALL of it. I really wish to me you someday and just listen to what you have to say and hear the stories of a real jazz musican… well hopefully this reaches someone. Thanks for reading!!!

Where can I find “In the swing seat” with Wynton?

I am a Sirius/XM Radio subscriber and enjoy the “In the swing seat” show that Wynton does on the weekends, but I can’t always listen to them each time. Where can I find an archive or download for past shows? I am particularly trying to find the show where Mr. Marsalis compared Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald’s singing styles. Please let me know where I can find an archive of that show or podcast if there is one available. I have looked on the XM Radio site and there isn’t anyting listed other than a program description.

Hello! First post here! Can anyone direct me to a published list of the most important/influential jazz albums from a particular decade? I’m mostly interested in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Thank you in advance!

WHERE ARE TODAY’S BLACK MALE CROONERS?

Dear Community,

I am writing to you ALL to ask you, where are the Black male Jazz Singers/Crooners? As a Jazz/Swing Vocalist/Crooner I must say that outside of my contemporary Gregory Porter, the list is bleak.

Listen to my debut single’s ‘That First Time’ and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’ which can be heard here on soundcloud for FREE before launching on Itunes- http://soundcloud.com/elijahrockjazz/swing-low-sweet-chariot

After headlining the KJAZZ (88.1) Hollywood & Highland Summer Jazz Concert Series in Los Angeles, CA on June 26th, 2012 I had a the realization that preserving the legacy of the great crooners like Arthur Prysock, Billy Eckstine, Joe Williams, Al Hibbler, Johnny Hartman, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr, and more, was up to me.

One of my Dreams is to sing with Wynon’s Big Band in NYC and take this music around the world! I’d love your feedback on my sound and any feedback as to why you think the Jazz world has not embraced or does not actively pursue Black Male Jazz, Pop Traditional Vocal artists.

Women missing in Wynton’s jazz orchestra

I love Wynton’s music and orchestra but why no women included except as singers sometimes? There are surely many excellent women jazz musicians that could be included.

Lip problems… Help appreciated…

Hello all. Ive been playing trumpet for the best part of 15 years now and been pro for almost 5. So far I’ve had a few lip injuries (ulcers, a knock from football) etc etc. I play usually 7 nights a week in my job, anything from big band to musicals to the odd classical set. I have been reading up a little on a situation known as ‘stiff lip’. At the moment (it’s occurred before) I’m havin big issues with stamina and the higher register. My lips feel (esp the top lip) weathered, almost brittle and more than anything it’s very frustrating sitting there not being able to play music which you know you can play standing on your head! In the past my job has enabled me to have a few days off, at the moment that isn’t possible. I always warm up with buzzing on my mouthpiece, low octaves etc etc. Does anyone have advice on other ways of overcoming this, things to do/not to do. Or does it just require some nights rest? Thanks all.

Where is the House of Tribes?

I’m planning a trip to New York and want to hit up some jazz clubs, big and small. One of the smaller ones I’d like to visit (even if nobody is playing while I’m there) is the House of Tribes, but I have no clue where it is. I’ve tried Googling it and it shows about 5 million little dots all over NY, none of which actually say House of Tribes.

So can anyone help me locate it??

Thanks!
